Johan Kuhn, author of the film “Exit”
New Security
On this year’s Festival of documentary and short film, Johan Kuhn presented himself with his film “Exit”. It’s a story about a man who is forced, after having lost his job, to leave his home and the environment that was hitherto familiar to him.
It is an “opera-film”, how did you choose to make a speechless story, only with pictures and sound?
- Sometimes, the words make things complicated, produce a misunderstanding. English, for example, is a language that is bringing us closer, we communicate with it and it should make us happy. Our mother tongue can hide a lot of things, but also to bring us closer. However, there is the world of dreams and art, the other world, in which worlds are not important.
Why did you opt for a speechless film?
- I wanted to free the film of text. In earlier films, which had dialogue, I understood that the text is drawing the public’s attention away and I wanted to release the mere interpretation. The character is, for example, forced to change not only the house he was living in, but his town also and to find a new anchoring point. The situation in which he was living until then became strange, he became a stranger in his own world, he needs new security.
